Heineken gave Dagenham a starring role in one of its ads back in June 2016, with the steps of the Civic Centre being transformed into the backdrop for a Formula 1 race winners podium.
The commercial, which aired in September 2016, was filmed at the Grade II listed Art Deco building in Rainham Road North. It features racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart and is part of the beer brand’s ‘No thank you, I’m driving’ series. This is just one instance when the public building has been used as a shoot location; Geordie lass Cheryl Cole also shot a cover story for InStyle magazine here, while Tom Hardy recorded scenes for musical mystery thriller London Road. As well as the Civic Centre, the crew also filmed a garden party scene at Central Park’s rugby park, which was transformed into a sixties-style soiree. We’ll cheers to that!
